Grapefruit Moon Gallery is honored to be able to offer “Ye Chiseler – Yo Ho Ho And a Bottle of Rum”, a large, commanding, seductive and masterful mural created by Henry Clive, to our eyes the finest illustrator working in jazz age Hollywood. Along with its companion work “The Infidel” (also available through Grapefruit Moon Gallery), Clive created this masterwork for the tavern of The Masquers Club, a historic and fascinating Hollywood institution.

Grapefruit Moon Gallery is ecstatic to offer Sultana, the original Louis F. Dow commissioned calendar pin-up painting by Henry Clive. Created in 1925, Sultana is in all regards the artist’s signature and defining creation, featuring an exotic nearly nude dreamy enchantress in an Art Deco Egyptian fantasy dreamscape. This enchanting artwork is littered with sophisticated touches such as the Moorish architecture which glimmers behind Sultana as she releases a white dove. This timeless image was again issued in 1941 as a mutoscope card with the title Lucky Dove–a vintage calendar print and mutoscope card are included in the sale.

A Grecian inspired, fantasy themed, mixed media illustration that was used by the Thos. D. Murphy Calendar company for a 1930 calendar titled The Glory That Was Ancient Greece. This whimsical yet erotic Grecian maiden themed work consists of a heavily tinted photograph of the two Grecian adorned beauties by L.G. Woolenden and an elaborate garden landscape painting by Rudolph Ingerle that envelopes the photographic element. This team of enterprising calendar art talents created numerous works under the pseudonym L. Goddard Surviving original L Goddard artworks are quite rare and spectacular, and among our favorite examples of fantastical and escapist art deco/Great Depression calendar illustration. A large printed calendar from the Thomas D. Murphy calendar company archives is included in the sale.

A rare and large stunning pastel by noted illustrator Adelaide Hiebel. A remarkable composition, in pristine condition, this is a monumental example of American Calendar art and effortlessy illustrates the allure of the Indian Maiden and the Depression era popular culture interest with exotic-themed escapism. This illustration is pictured in the Collectors Press reference book Vintage Illustration on page 200. Interestingly the artists name is misspelled on the pastel as it is on the Gerlach-Barklow Calendar Co art print. This is 100% guaranteed original and vintage and by the hand of Adelaide Hiebel.

This is a haunting original illustration of an Egyptian Princess trying to save her Dying Prince, by concocting some potions as a serpent feeds and assorted Black Magic abounds. A stunning presumably interior book plate illustration signed Maurice Greiffenhasen. This evokes the early 1900’s imagery of Coles Phillips and Maxfield Parrish and is masterfully executed with a very stylized art deco Egyptian aesthetic.

During the 1920’s in America, all eyes were seemingly on the discovery and subsequent opening of King Tutankhamun’s tomb. For a brief period the decorative arts reflected this fascination with all things Egyptian. This influence is today referred to as Art Deco Egyptian. Here is a magnificent example of this popular culture obsession as painted by renouned illustrator Rudolph Schabelitz depicting the presentation of a pectoral and necklace to Princess Sat of Egypt 1800 B.C.

A rare surviving original illustration by James Arthur for use as calendar art created in the late 1920’s for the Louis F. Dow calendar company under the title Land of Sky Blue Waters. The allure of the Indian Maiden proved inspiration for many American Illustrators. They were curiously portrayed as “white” and anglicized in their features. Today, Indian Maidens are even more collectible than during their initial popularity of the 1920’s. This work has photographic elements in her face and figure (which was often the case with artists of this genre), with much detailed oil painting. A published calendar top with artwork is included in sale.
