American painter and illustrator Bart Forbes (b. 1939) was specially commissioned to create a series of interior illustrations for The Franklin Library’s 1977 publication of the novel House Made of Dawn by N. Scott Momaday.

The novel is widely credited as leading the way for the breakthrough of Native American literature into the mainstream. It was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1969 and has also been noted for its significance in Native American anthropology.

A wonderful detailed original drawing by Harrison Fisher illustrating Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast, found on page 99 of Bobbs Merrill’s 1906 book, The Song of Hiawatha, an epic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. This charcoal and pencil drawing depicts the Indian Chief storyteller specifically. The complete book in which this appeared is included with the sale. Framed in a fumed oak arts and crafts aesthetic, wide quarter sawn frame, double matted and ready to hang in your home, office, art gallery or museum.

A rare surviving mixed medium calendar commissioned painting for “American Art Works Company”. A Great Depression-era 1930s art deco work by L. Goddard of a lovely young Indian maiden drawing back cupid’s bow and taking aim. This large impressive work is beautifully framed and matted and ready to hang in a period ornate carved wood gold frame.

This rare original painting by Henry Clive graced the cover of the June 18, 1933 edition of William Randolph Hearst’s The American Weekly. Clive was often called upon to create serialized images of pin up enchantresses who embodied a theme. This is one of those works – from a series of images which depicted a variety of maidens about to be struck by cupid’s arrow.

A well rendered and rare surviving 1920s original oil on board illustration by the prolific New York artist Charles M. Relyea. Featuring an art deco Indian Maiden this is a fine example of American calendar art and was a widely published image titled “Chums” which evokes the allure of the Indian Maiden and wonderfully captures the Depression-era popular fascination with exotic-themed escapism.
