A decorative and extreme Art Deco/Machine Age pen and ink advertising drawing by Cardwell Higgins for the 1927 Cadillac Convertible. Work is signed and dated lower right and beautifully framed and matted behind glass; from the estate of Charles Martignette. Higgins was an accomplished draftsman and had a keen eye for design and graphics as seen in this smartly rendered work.

This stylized, fashionable pastel portrait of Hollywood film legend Norma Shearer by the prolific American illustrator Charles Sheldon shows off the sophistication the actress became known for in her pre-code appearances in films like The Divorcee. Sheldon was a leading illustrator of 1920s – 1930s Hollywood royalty, responsible for the covers which graced many of the film magazine titles […]

Who–Who’s There? is a large and genre defining oil on board pin-up painting by Edward Eggleston, which was published by the American Art Works calendar company in the early 1930s. This is a rare surviving published calendar painting by the New York artist, created in an impressive light and shadow technique, capturing an art deco nude […]

With irreverent humor, this original oil-on-board painting shows a horned satyr smoking a pipe distracted from his reading by a nude figure in the foreground.  Dating to 1929-1930, when Ovid’s Ars amatoria was in the news quite a bit, with the city of San Francisco’s ban of the Ars amatoria in 1929 and its legalization for […]

A darling and very Art Deco in aesthetic portrait of Mary Brian, the silent and early talkie era Hollywood film star. We do not have the specific usage of this oil on masonite painting but it was likely created as a cover for a late 1920s Hollywood Movie Magazine by the artist, who worked prolifically for a number of titles during the period. The china doll imagery was one which Clive favored, as it plays on the coquettish doll like charms of the flappers of the period. The painting is signed lower right and handsomely framed in a period wide profile antique frame behind glass.

An inventive and smart C.1930 pastel by frequent Golden Age of Hollywood Movie Magazine cover artist Mila Baine, showing a radiant and stylish Claudette Colbert. Likely a cover for the title Movie Mirror, where Blaine did numerous commissioned covers of Hollywood’s leading ladies in the early 1930s. From the collection of Ken Galente, former owner of Silver Screen Gallery in New York City.

A large American impressionist oil painting by the well listed illustrator Edmund Davenport. A frequent cover artist for a number of Golden Age of Illustration glossy magazine titles, Davenport excelled at this manner of romancing the celebratory moments of life without resorting to obvious sentimentalism. This well realized and luminous work utilizes an impasto technique and a lush fall color palette and was used as the cover for the November 1928 Thanksgiving cover for The American Magazine.
