What is Man That Thou Art Mindful of Him? asks this inspirational and spiritual large male nude oil painting by the well-listed New Rochelle based illustrator and artist Walter Beach Humphrey. This new to the market, prize-winning ‘Rock of Ages’ scene was owned for many years by the artist’s daughter, Constance June Humphrey. As a young child in the late 1920s, Constance was a favored model of her father’s friend Norman Rockwell. Humphrey and Rockwell shared a New Rochelle hayloft when they were both starting out. The exceptional provenance and history of the painting evoke the spirit of when it was painted and the special talents and life of the painter.

A 1920s original oil on canvas painting by noted New York artist and muralist John Hemming Fry. Like his fellow muralists Eugene Savage and Edwin H. Blashfield, Fry created epic imagery in a dreamscape romanticized style, borrowing freely from classical Greek, Celtic and Roman folklore and imagery. This mythological trilogy on death and dying features three separate vignettes painted in subdued blue and steel gray tones against a background of ancient Northern European hills. A flowing, lyrical, sometimes abstracted composition that also incorporates elements of the contemporaneous Dada and Surrealist movements. An inventive and decorative large antique oil painting that retains its original handsome gesso frame, and is verso inkstamped by the artist.

A large allegorical oil on stretched canvas, created for a 1919 Edition Of Randolph Hearst’s Hearst Magazine. Titled ” In The Year Of Our Lord”. A handsome near nude angel in the midst of a gathering of the wretched in a Book of Revelations inspired scene. This mythic and richly iconic humanist, sensuous, yet spiritual art is the genre Charles Allan Winter helped develop. This is a deeply moving and emotionally raw published original painting by this leading artist.

A highly stylized, art deco original etching in the manner of Rockwell Kent, Lynd Ward, and other period art deco artists. Image is evocotive and surreal in form; notice the female nude form in the background. Artwork is unsigned and retains original frame and blue velvet matting which shows some staining but appears original to etching and is still quite charming as seen.
