Original Art from the Grand Age of American Illustration
A defining huge original charcoal on board of a divine bathing beauty in a smart, streamlined art deco style by the American Illustrator McClelland Barclay. Model looks to be Gracie Allen and this was most likely used in the General Motors Body by Fisher Advertising campaign for which Barclay is fondly remembered. Work is a defining example by this talented and prolific artist and beautifully matted and framed.

A crisply executed, apple pie Americana genre vision. This peaceful artwork showcases the post WWII economic boom and leisure pursuits of the growing American middle class.

An unusual pen & ink drawing by famed William Randolph Hearst illustrator Nell Brinkley, creator of the Brinkley Girl. This intricately detailed 1931 illustration offers satirical social commentary on the deliterious effects the ongoing Great Depression was having on economic health around the world. In this lighter take on troubled times, an enchanting Brinkley Girl and other assorted imp-ish friends try to soften the stern face on “Old Man Depression.”

A genre defining original illustration painting for the October 1956 edition of Imagination Science Fiction for the interior story by Edmond Hamilton titled Citadel Of The Star Lords. By Lloyd Rognan (1923-2005) an Original oil on illustration board depicting ufo’s , rayguns, mayhem and all things lurid sci-fi, set amongst the ruins of a town center square anytown USA circa 1950’s. The artist recently passed away and many works were recently auctioned off directly from his estate. This to my eyes was one of the defining work by this highly regarded and frequently published illustrator.

A wonderful whimsically-rendered interior illustration for the long running American magazine, Judge. Titled A Dangerous Landing from the early days of aviation and the heroism associated by “those men in their flying machines”. Marked on verso Judge magazine and beautifully-framed in a large, period, fumed oak frame.

During the 1920’s in America, all eyes were seemingly on the discovery and subsequent opening of King Tutankhamun’s tomb. For a brief period the decorative arts reflected this fascination with all things Egyptian. This influence is today referred to as Art Deco Egyptian. Here is a magnificent example of this popular culture obsession as painted by renouned illustrator Rudolph Schabelitz depicting the presentation of a pectoral and necklace to Princess Sat of Egypt 1800 B.C.

This humorous watercolor by famed American Illustrator, James Montgomery Flagg, attests to the fraternity and friendship that existed between peers during the Golden Age of Illustration. After Clive threatened to leave illustration behind and become a southwestern landscape painter, Flagg perfectly lampooned Clive in this painting. Flagg was an amazingly prolific illustrator and is best known for his WWI poster artwork and for creating the resonating famed image of our dear old Uncle Sam.

This is a touching, inscribed presentation drawing from Zeigfeld Follies illustrator, Henry Clive, to Alfred Cheney Johnston, the legendary long time Follies photographer. Johnston was a leading 1920’s movie and performist portrait photographer. I have several vintage 1920’s examples of his photography currently listed in the Photographs and Prints category on this site.

Included with this painting, is a delightful February 1923 issue of Shadowland Magazine-Expressing the Arts. This artist’s work is featured in a full page color plate on page 9 of this publication.
