This remarkable art deco Orientalist scene by the American illustrator and cartoonist Frank Godwin, depicts the interior story “Ali Baba And The Forty Thieves”, from the 1920 children’s book Stories The Sandman Told, a complete copy of which is included in the sale. Pictured in this gouache on board painting, is Morgiana, a slave girl who is pouring hot oil into a jar containing one of the forty thieves, killing the robber within. Employing a mythical fantasy style, Godwin was clearly influenced by the Golden Age artist Maxfield Parrish in his execution of the illustrations for this volume, making for a compelling and really strong example by this prolific American illustrator. Painting is handsomely silk matted and framed in a period art deco aesthetic wide profile gold frame.
