french maid

In this original oil on canvas painting by the prolific artist Forrest H. Clough, an aspiring French maid studies up on both her language skill and the art of seduction. From the suggestively placed feather duster to the silk stockings and garter costuming, this fresh to the market vintage calendar artwork presents a provocative, not so subtle take on the American pin up.

This early original pin-up pastel which Earl Moran created for the Brown & Bigelow Calendar Company of Saint Paul Mn is a variation of the 1942 mutoscope card “Easy To Take”. It is unclear whether Moran liked his naughty nurse themed offering so much that he created this similarly styled image soon after its publication, or if this was Moran’s original idea, and Brown & Bigelow asked for him to turn from the French Maid homecoming piece seen here into an example of the popular candy striper pin up which was published as a hotcha girl image.

A fresh to the market (and fresh in subject matter) 1940s original pin-up painting by Edward D’Ancona, created for the Louis F. Dow Calendar Company. Titled “Downstairs Maid” this is really a spirited rendering with an overtly erotic theme. For those of you keeping score, this commissioned cheesecake “Americana gone wrong” genre of pin-up art is white hot currently. This is by all accounts a defining example. This published illustration painting is in a very fine state of conservation, nicely matted and framed and ready to hang in your gallery, library or home.

One of only a handful of Patriotic WWI themed works by Edward Brewer created for the Cream of Wheat advertising campaign. “None But The Brave…” features an attractive French waitress cheerily serving a US soldier stationed abroad. This 1918 artwork explores the post World War I Franco- American friendship and harmony. This new-to-the-market advertising painting is an iconic and luminous piece of American history in excellent condition, and embodies the finest of this storied advertising campaign.
