This luminous, expressive oil on masonite was created as an interior story illustration by beloved american artist Tom Lovell, which has verso notations which lead us to believe this was published in the May, 1947 edition of American Magazine, a title the artist frequently worked for. A young snappily attired couple are shown surrendering to the exotic allure that is Venice Italy, accompanied by a gondola driver in this sunset cityscape scene deftly painted as always by Lovell. A fabulous example of narrative illustration art, Lovell in his own words said: “I consider myself a storyteller with a brush. I try to place myself back in imagined situations that would make interesting and appealing pictures. I am intent on producing paintings that relate to the human experience.”
