In this signed oil on illustration board painting by William Medcalf, a breezy young blonde pin-up dream girl is seen contently sipping Grapette Soda on a bustling summer day as a man in the background prepares a sailboat, presumably to take her out for a lovely day on the lake. This large detailed painting was created as advertising for Grapette Soda during the 1940s and a very similar variant of this image by Medcalf did appear in Grapette print advertising campaigns. A large vintage calendar top of that published advertisement is included in the sale. Please note, though it is slightly unusual that the artist would have created two variations on the same scene, this is in no way a preliminary work. It is as detailed and finished, and to these eyes even lovelier than the image that was used for publication. The artist typically marked his preliminary works “Sketch” after his signature, and no such notation appears here, further indicating this is a completed work. Grapefruit Moon Gallery recently acquired this painting at a Minneapolis estate sale held at the the house of the artist, where members of Medcalf’s family were present. We will be offering two other paintings from his estate shortly.
Painting has been professionally matted and shrink wrapped and is ready for framing or display.
