An iconic early original pin up oil painting by Gil Elvgren for the Louis F. Dow calendar company of Saint Paul, Minnesota titled “A Hitch in Time.” In this never before offered published calendar work, a pretty modernist pin up girl is caught hitching up her sexy silk stockings in a hurried moment while tangled up in her dog’s leash. A exemplary piece from the situational cheesecake pin up trend. Gil Elvgren started his career with Louis F. Dow but due to his wild popularity, he was quickly offered a more lucrative contract with their rival Brown & Bigelow. By the mid-1940s, when Elvgren girls were far and away the most popular pin ups on the market, The Louis Dow calendar company had staff artists such as Vaughan Bass overpaint their remaining Elvgren canvases with new background scenes in a moment of crass commercialism that today seems blasphemous. This rare unaltered surviving early work was recently discovered and purchased by our gallery and we are delighted to offer it.
