An original gouache cover painting for an unidentified issue of the notorious French publication “La Vie Parisienne”. The long running, humorous and racy magazine chronicled the exploits and sexual proclivities of sassy and free spirited French follies showgirls and their often dim witted suitors in risque, breezy, spicy pulp-like fashion. This original gouache painting is nicely double matted in an oval window in a fine antique ornate gesso gold frame behind glass.

From the estate of legendary jazz-age Ziegfeld Follies photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston comes this sensational pastel by noted American illustrator Penrhyn Stanlaws. Inscribed “To Cheney from Penrhyn Stanlaws”, this is a fabulous offering it features a stylish 1920s flapper girl in a cloche hat admiring her abundant beauty in a compact mirror. This was created as the cover for the October 4, 1924 issue of Collier’s magazine, and later inscribed and gifted to Johnston.

A large signed and dated 1917 oil on canvas by Margaret Lindsay Williams, the important Royal Academy award winning Welsh artist. Williams has the distinction of being the lone artist to have had a studio in Westminster Abbey. Along with her darkly beautiful fine art, she painted portraits of Queen Alexandria and The Prince of Wales. In 1922, amidst much hoopla, she was brought to the US to paint President Harding’s portrait. This remarkable large work bears its label from a 1917 London’s Royal Academy exhibition. This is an important large decorative dark masterwork from an artist of the utmost historical significance.

A beautiful and mysterious original art deco period oil on canvas, titled on verso Vanity. Art is signed in upper left, as seen, and appears to be Jochumsen. I believe the artist was a Oliver C. Jochumsen who worked in Philadelphia and later mover to Arizona and was a painter there of some merit, so much in fact the Arizona watercolor society currently awards the “Oliver C. Jochumsen” honor to new emerging artists. A delightful, Art Deco nude rendering with swans, which borrows from the Leda And The Swan motif. I cannot tell you more about this work other than that it is vintage, 1920’s, and really wonderful as a decorative art piece or perhaps as a published piece in Vanity Fair or Vogue, or another period publication.
