Original Art from the Grand Age of American Illustration
Along with its companion work “Ye Chiselers” (previously sold through Grapefruit Moon Gallery), Clive created this masterwork for the tavern of The Masquers Club, a historic and fascinating Hollywood institution. A reclining redheaded flapper is seen consorting with a Persian genie of sorts, illustrating the verse from the Rubaiyat which is inscribed on the mural.

This exceptionally large oil on canvas mural by Henry Clive was created for the long gone legendary Hollywood Boulevard haunt “The Jade Lounge.” Titled “The Buddha-Pest,” the image acted as a logo for the bar, with matchbooks and post cards created with its likeness to attract tourists. The Jade Lounge became a destination and this monumental painting remained a focal point of the restaurant for decades. Henry Clive executed several murals for Hollywood nightclubs, and for The Masquers Club, Hollywood’s oldest theatrical club.

A rare surviving original oil painting by Leslie Thrasher which was created as cover art the June 18, 1927 issue of Liberty Magazine. A Westward expanionist-themed view of California real estate speculation and planned communities, featuring a handsome modernist jazz age couple imagining their new life at the intersection of Buena Vista Boulevard & Broadway. Hope, determination and an underlying tension are created with the surprising color palette and the placement of the central figures against a surround that lies purely in the speculative imagination.
