The original cover painting by H.W. McCauley used for the August 1953 cover of “Fate, True Stories of the Strange and Unknown”, illustrating “The Gods of Voodoo” by North Hildabrand. In this offering a dancing pin-up girl levitates oblivious to the black magic and darkness that lurks in the background where a goat is about to get sacrificed in a voodoo ritualistic fire blazing act, creating the collision of beauty and darkness which is in essence what makes the pulp cover paintings by H.J. Ward, H.W. McCauley, Virgil Finlay and other American illustrators fascinating and so desirable today.

This very rare illustration is possibly the only surviving pin-up girl, non-menace themed spicy pulp cover painting ever offered for sale by H.J. Ward. This was created for the spicy pulp title “Tattle Tales” and was published as either the March 1937 or June 1937 edition. Hugh J. Ward was a prolific pulp cover artist who has enjoyed much recent acclaim. At a recent 2010 auction, one of Ward’s damsel in distress cover paintings (August 1936 Spicy Mystery Stories) fetched $143,400.

A roaring 20’s flapper girl in a tophat tames a pair of tigers with her feminine guiles. Most likely a cover for a spicy pulp or early vaudeville era magazine. Artwork is mindful of similar covers by Earle K . Bergey, Otto Grenier or H.J. Ward. Like much pulp cover art, this work is unsigned.

This rare surviving original oil on canvas by H.J. Ward was created for the September, 1938 edition of Romantic Western. Only in the upside down, just plain evil world of the pulps would such a lurid and unchivalrous ultra-violent depiction exist on the same playing field with the word romantic. Painted with enough action to capture […]
