A large format redheaded pin up girl cover painting by the well listed female artist Ellen (E.B.) Segner, used as the cover for The Toronto Star Weekly, July 22, 1950. The artist was a prolific calendar artist who worked for the Louis F. Dow and Thomas D. Murphy Calendar Companies during the 1930s – 40s. Segner was also a children’s book illustrator and contributed covers for glossy mainstream magazines such as Liberty, she is best remembered today for the Little Miss Sunbeam imagery she created for the Sunbeam Bread Company.
This large and rare surviving oil on canvas cover painting was relined and cleaned and conserved in 2001, the verso has a label showing the work done, it is housed in a wide format handsome gallery frame and ready to display, with a somewhat tattered version of the published cover included in the sale.
